The Correct Techniques for Applying Lipstick

Lipstick is the most popular and versatile form of makeup. It has the ability to add just a hint of beauty or high drama to your look, depending on what you are going for. However, how you apply your lipstick will determine how good it will look and how long it lasts. While everybody will have their own technique or tricks for applying lipstick, if you follow these steps below you are sure to have a great finish.

Exfoliate & Moisturize

First you have to prepare your lips. It is essential that they are in the best condition possible so that the lipstick will go on easily and have a flawless look when you’re done. The very first thing that you need to do is to exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin cells that would prevent smooth application.

There are many ways to exfoliate, but the most common is to use a toothbrush or a damp towel and move over the lips in a circular motion to remove the dead skin. You can also make a gentle exfoliant at home with sugar and a little beauty oil or honey.

The next step is to moisturize your lips. You can do so by applying lip balm and letting it stay on for a few minutes. If you are wearing any other type of makeup, it’s good to put on the lip balm first to give it some time to work; then you can return to the lips afterwards. If possible, its best that you apply lip balm on your lips overnight, and the dead cells will be very easily removed in the morning. Your lips will also be super-moisturized and ready.

Remove Moisturizer

Before you move on the next steps, all traces of the moisturizer must be removed from your lips. They must be absolutely dry before you proceed.

Setting Powder or Foundation

Professional makeup artists will tell you that priming your lips is a critical step in how your lipstick will look and how long it wears. It gives the lipstick something to hold on to, fills in any lines that might be present, and will minimize the chance of the lipstick bleeding. There are a few ways that you can prime your lips; you can use a setting powder or a foundation or you can use a lip liner as a base. If you are using powder make sure you apply lightly and remove any excess. The same goes for foundation. You can also use a lip liner as a base.

Line Lips with Liner

You should line your lips with a lip liner. The advice on the color of the pencil differs – some suggest using a liner that is the same color of your skin while others suggest using a liner the color of the shade you will be wearing. You can try different methods to see what works best for you.

Apply Lipstick

The lipstick should be applied starting at center and moving outwards. You should apply at least two coats of lipstick, blotting in between coats.

Blotting serves to keep lipstick off of your teeth and to make the lipstick last longer. To blot the inside of your lips you can put your finger in your mouth, close your lips around it, then gently pull out your finger. You can also fold a sheet of tissue in half, place it between your lips and gently press down on the tissue.

Fixing Outside the Line

If you have lipstick on any area outside of your lip line, you can use concealer to fix it. You can use a cotton swab or a lip brush to take care of these areas, by gently touching them, making sure to blend the concealer into your foundation.
